Course Overview
Sports Therapy is a rapidly developing area of healthcare, with the public and sporting population becoming increasingly aware of the requirements to care for their bodies from a health and exercise perspective. This does mean that they are more at risk of injury. By studying this course you could become part of this profession working with elite athletes, in the NHS, or as part of your own Sports Therapy business.
This full-time, one year degree offers sports science (or similar) graduates the opportunity to develop the practical and theoretical skills to become a graduate Sports Therapist. On successful completion of this masters you will be entitled to become a member of The Society of Sports Therapists and able to practice as a Sports Therapist in your chosen field of specialism.
You can choose to study our MSc Sports Therapy either full-time or part-time.
What will this course cover?
Sports Therapy is based on five pillars of competency:
- prevention
- recognition and evaluation
- management, treatment and referral
- rehabilitation
- education and professional practice issues.
This course has been designed around these five pillars and in accordance with the educational competencies of a Sports Therapist as set by The Society of Sports Therapists. The degree will take you through the ability to deal with an injury from the point of trauma (including a trauma management qualification) to assessment and diagnosis, followed by development of a full therapeutic treatment and exercise rehabilitation plan to return the patient back to their previous level of sport or exercise.
What are my career prospects
A Sports Therapist is a healthcare professional. Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to apply for full membership of The Society of Sports Therapists. With appropriate insurance this will enable you to work autonomously within professional and elite sport, the NHS or in private practice. This course is based upon placement and work experience opportunities which will enable development of key contacts within industry to help the progression into a career in Sports Therapy. Your dissertation will also be centred around the opportunity to publish your work and may lead into further research work, including PhD.

The course team recognise that it is not only what you know but also what and where you have work experience that will enhance your employment. This course is fully accredited by the professional body for Sports Therapy – ‘The Society of Sports Therapists’.
